Great facilities and good looking school. Professor Kauan is very knowledgeable and helpful to his students. He cares about each student and teaches to their strengths and abilities. I love training at Checkmat Clearwater and it has a family atmosphere.

This is where you want to be. Whether you're green and never trained a day in your life or a brown belt looking for a new home. Professor Kauan and his wife, Siouxsie are excellent instructors! They move at a great pace and really drive the discipline of repetition. I would also like to add they’re big on family. The academy has plenty of days to keep the morale of Checkmat high, such as seminars, family days & potlucks. The entire experience of jiujitsu is under this roof!
Kauan is such a detailed instructor it makes following any class he teaches easy for beginners, and his technique is a great addition for advanced practitioners. Siouxsie is such an experienced and patient kid’s instructor. She is a great role model for everyone on and off the mats! Overall this is a great environment for the whole family. Come create a family of killers on the mats here! Just make sure you’re consistent— because as professor says “consistency is key!”
Could not possibly speak highly enough about Coach Kauan!! He is exactly everything you want in a teacher. Extremely knowledgeable but also knows how to slow it down and teach it. Stern but fair. Kind but pushes you to be your best. From elite competition level athletes to beginners to kids, he is without a doubt, the best the sport has to offer!!
